Instruction
The research essay requires you to analyse a twentieth century terrorist group. The aim of the assessment is to utilise materials from the course (its frameworks, concepts, texts) and apply it to contexts other than the Global War on Terror.
Using the chosen organisation, your essay must:
a) present an argument or a key question around which your analysis (answer) will be established.
b) pay close attention to at least one of the theoretical concepts (for instance, premeditation, professionalisation of security, security discourse, political memory, remembering, emotion, forgetting, trauma, ideology, imagining future threat, etc..). These concepts are meant to be used as critical analytical tools that will help you structure a thoughtful analysis of your case study.
c) give a concise overview of that organisation’s stated aims, methods, actions
d) critical analysis of the broader historical and political context that led to the emergence of the organisation and societal effects of the organisation’s operations.
e) evaluate the domestic and/or international counterterrorism responses to that organisation’s actions.¬
Twentieth century terrorist groups include,: Irgun, National Liberation Front (FLN), Basque separatists (ETA), Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Irish Republican Army (IRA), Red Army Faction (RAF), Tamil Tigers (LTTE), Japanese Red Army, Weather Underground, Hezbollah, and Aum Shin Rikyo.
