Communications Class Persuasive Appeal Assignment Write a 3-4 page paper on one of the topics listed below. This assignment requires you to choose and defend a stance on a controversial issue. To do so successfully will require you to research your topic and apply course concepts (logic, credibility and evidence in particular). This assignment is worth 200 points.

FORMAT. The paper must be double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, page numbers, have 1 inch margins, and should follow APA (American Psychological Association) format for in-text and reference citations (See http://www.apastyle.org/learn/tutorials/basics-tutorial.aspx.). The References page/s at the end of the paper are not included in the 3-4 page count. In other words, you need to write 3-4 pages of content. This paper must be submitted in pdf or MSWord format. Papers submitted in any other format will not be graded and result in a zero (0). EVIDENCE/SOURCES. At least 4 sources must be used. It is strongly recommended that you follow the guidelines covered in class for finding and use of credible sources. Each source must be cited both in the essay and on a Works Cited page. I’ll not be looking for you to follow the formatting exactly but rather that a good faith effort has been made to use the APA formatting. Review the instruction and examples below. 1. For in-essay citations, put the author name/s followed by a comma and the year of publication in parentheses at the end of the sentence (but before the period) that references the source. Example of an in-essay citation: It could be argued that humankind was not meant to stay in one place for life. People tend to go where the action is, whether action is defined as food, resources, jobs, or entertainment (Taylor, 2009). 1. Use the formatting described on the APA website (above) for your citations on the Works Cited page. Different types of sources are cited differently on the Works Cited page. Example of one form: Taylor, J. (2009). Home and hearth: Loving the space you are with. The Journal of Relocation, 3(7), 111-115. Retrieved from Academic Search Premier database. These 2 examples are from this website: http://libguides.sullivan.edu/content.php?pid=289203&sid=2377389 The Purdue OWL site also has a great sample paper to use for guidance on formatting citations. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/media/pdf/20090212013008_560.pdf   PAPER ORGANIZATION. Generally, the content of the paper should follow this outline: I. Introduction a. Position Statement b. Preview II. Body a. Claim #1 and supporting evidence with transition to next point b. Claim #2 and supporting evidence with transition to next point c. Claim #3 and supporting evidence with transition to next point III. Appropriate Conclusion This is a guideline and will not work exactly for each essay. PAPER PROPOSITIONS/TOPICS. In order to make grading at the end of the semester more efficient, the topic of the paper must come from the list below. • College teachers should be required to warn students when upcoming material in class/lecture may trigger difficult memories or other mental health symptoms (anxiety, panic, etc). • To graduate college students should be required to demonstrate minimal understanding of international events. • Online college courses should require at least some synchronous time (times when all students are online together, either via video or chat functions). • Public colleges should accept food stamps in college-sponsored dining areas. • Interpersonal communication skills quality is declining as the use of technology increases. • American citizens should have to show proof of tax payment in order to vote. • Single-use use plastic bags should be banned. • The current American focus on STEM compromises development of other kinds of thinking/learning.
