BIOLOGY 322 RESEARCH PAPER You will be writing a research paper on a topic of your choice related to Cell Biology (several possible starting points are listed below) and presenting it to the class at the end of the semester. In the process, you will become an “expert” on that particular area of cell biology. Many of the topics you find will require reading ahead in your textbook, since we may not cover these subjects until after Spring Break. There are enough topics related to cell biology that no duplicate subject areas will be used and you must write on a topic you have not used for other courses. Most of you have already written scientific papers and know that it involves a different style of writing and citations (for more detail, see A Short Guide to Writing About Biology by Jan A. Pechenik, or Writing in the Biological Sciences by Angelika H. Hofmann). Information on literature citation is available on Moodle, be sure to follow the format shown (i.e. single spacing for individual citations, double spacing between each citation, journal names in italics). In your text, cite as (Smith, 1996), (Smith and Wesson, 1996), or (Smith et al., 1996) if there are more than two authors. You must have at least 4 primary references (extensively cited) and at least one secondary literature source. Remember that secondary sources write about a topic, whereas primary sources contain the actual data gathered by a particular laboratory and contribute to that area of study. Good starting points include Cell, Science, Nature, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) – all of which are available in our library or through Pub Med or other search engines. You should try to use references from 2005-2018 (or as recent as possible) and then trace the subject back from the most current journal articles. Papers should be 6-8 pages in length and written clear enough that a fellow Cell Biology student could understand it. You are encouraged to add diagrams and tables from journals (with journal citation beneath) in an Appendix section beyond the 6-8 page limit. Many topics require such figures to make sense out of the written text, in which case you would say: (see Fig. 1 in appendix). Format: TITLE PAGE – including title, your name, and date. TEXT – the actual review, not necessarily divided into sections, but with an introductory paragraph, a critical discussion of what has been done recently, and a concluding paragraph stating current thoughts regarding the topic and future work to be done. Text should be 6 pages minimum, 8 pages maximum, not including tables and figures. APPENDIX – if applicable (for most it will be necessary!). LITERATURE CITED – labeled as such, not “Bibliography” Papers must be typed and double spaced. One inch margins should be used. Footnotes are not to be used (see Pechenik or Hofmann) and formats for tables and figures should conform to accepted methods. The first draft and final copy will be submitted by April 29th . Do your own work, the penalty for plagiarism is an “F” for the course!
