Instruction
General guidelines for all your papers
• Develop a clear argument
o Begin with an attention-getting introduction
o A strong, clear thesis statement (not a statement of intent) is important and should be easy for the reader to find
o Paragraphs should be well-developed and be organized into a rational structure
o Wrap it up with a solid conclusion
• Use MLA or APA style guides
o Yellow Book
o 2016 MLA Guide on Bb
o https://owl.english.purdue.edu
o Primary sources must come from among the texts assigned in the class.
o You may not write more than one paper on any one text or author. ( Johann Wolfgang von Goethe The Sorrows of Young Werther OR Nguyen Du, The Tale of Kieu)
o Always make sure to actually quote and directly discuss primary sources.
o Always introduce material from your sources.
o Always cite your sources immediately after using them.
o As a rule of thumb, you should use approximately as many sources as you have pages.
o Internet sources must be used judiciously. Avoid .com sites; never use sites like sparknotes or Schmoop oonline encyclopedias, such as wikipedia, as they lack scholarly rigor. The use of such resources reflects poorly upon you as a scholar. However, the use of a living author’s own webpage or a recent magazine interview can make you seem au courant. Academic websites (.edu), or websites from scholarly organizations are often credible and useful.
o You may use books. Our library has a number of collections of essays chosen for their relevance to frequently-taught texts.
o You may use peer-reviewed journal articles retrieved from electronic databases through our library, such as GALE, Lexis-Nexis, or Onesearch. These are probably your best resources.
o If you are able to carry out research in multiple languages, that is acceptable within certain guidelines. You may cite a non-English language secondary source as long as you include the source in the original and English translation. (See me for guidance on how to format this in MLA). You may only use secondary sources in the following languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. For primary sources, please use all the texts in the editions assigned in class.
• Avoid plagiarism
o Cite all sources accurately and appropriately (according to MLA)
o Plagiarism will result in a 0 for the paper as well as a report to the Academic Standards Committee
o Consult http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/, your grammar handbook, and the Yellow Book
o Plagiarized papers may not be rewritten
• Write me a letter
o Each paper should be prefaced by a one-page letter to the instructor. This should be included in the single Microsoft word document that contains your paper, but not included in the paper’s page length. In this letter, please discuss your paper-writing process. Why did you choose your subject? What aspects of your paper are you especially pleased with/concerned about? What were you trying to accomplish with your argument? Are there particular aspects of your writing that you would particularly like feedback on? I will respond to your concerns when I grade your paper.• Choose your papers carefully
o Generally, you are expected to write three papers in my courses. Choose from the writing prompts included in the syllabus. You may submit the papers in any order you like.
o Most of the prompts require research. Research papers should be 5-7 pages long and reference 5-7 sources (including primary sources). At least two of the papers you write must be researched.
o Some of the prompts are more creative in nature and do not require research. You may use research in these papers, but it is optional. Non-researched papers should be 8-10 pages long. Only one of the papers you write may be a non-researched assignment. You may not choose a researched assignment, write it without doing research, and submit it as a non-researched assignment. Only the papers which are marked as not requiring research may be submitted without research.
o If the course is a 300-level or above, you may choose to write one short paper and one long paper. The long paper must be a research paper; I expect it to be approximately 15 pages long. Again, you may choose your deadlines. If you are choosing the long paper option, I expect a brief paper proposal describing your long essay to be submitted on the due date for the short paper you are skipping.
