Margaret Atwood’s The Year of the Flood is the most complex work of cli-fi we’ve encountered so far in this course. Some of the complexity comes from the novel’s three-voice structure, which we began discussing in Tuesday’s digital discussion. An even more significant source of the complexity, though, comes from the idea Atwood expresses in her essay, “It’s not Climate Change — It’s Everything Change,” that a changing climate will have wide-ranging effects on our economy, our political structures, and our way of life. Atwood’s novel doesn’t just imagine the consequences of climate change for a specific region, as Paolo Bacigalupi did in The Water Knife. Instead, she presents a much larger narrative about a society experiencing not just climate change, but “everything change.” Her characters must figure out who they are and what they value in the context of profound climate, cultural, and socioeconomic change. **Respond to prompt that is in instruction part!
