  • Melissa Cordova I strongly believe gambling is part of our culture. Many people participate in gambling as a fun activity, and casinos and lottery playing has become the norm in our society. I can see how gambling might be viewed as a deviance, but in my opinion, that only happens when gambling becomes an addiction and starts to affect your daily life. It can also be viewed as a deviance when it puts other people or animals at risk. People also partake in gambling, not just for fun, but also to earn money. Whether the gambling people are participating in is legal or illegal, a lot of people will go great lengths to win. Although few forms of illegal gambling are seen as appalling (such as dog and cock fighting), there are also forms of illegal gambling that are acceptable amongst many people (such as drag racing and sports betting). I think it’s pretty common to hear people in our society and culture say that they participate in some form of gambling.

  • Ikey Rothman In order to ascertain whether gambling is a part of our culture at least in America in present day, a brief description of culture would prove necessary. When aspects of society are so ingrained that the subject is such a commonplace venue and activity visited and used by many, it becomes what we call a norm. When all people of different backgrounds within the melting pot of America subserve to a certain activity whether in the comfort of their home, on vacation, or as I've literally done in the airport, It is safe to say that it is in fact a cultural feat. I am against gambling from my own prejudices as well as experience, but even I, who am opposed to any form of the art, find myself falling prey to its clutches multiple times a year.

  • I bet with friends quite often, and for things that literally don't even matter. What's the drive? It would make no logical sense for me to be pulled toward betting in a society where it never caught on, never was so absorbed and endorsed by the populace. Yet here we are in America, where we have an entire city dedicated to the sport, where people gamble and night. It is hard to even attempt to disassociate gambling from our culture in the first place to do how essential the whole department is to our financial infrastructure. Gambling I would posit, is definitely a cultural aspect of our daily lives.

  • Natalie Macaluso After reading chap 8 and watching the online video "Gambling in Las Vegas", it has been made clear that there are connections between these two sources. Cha 8 focuses pon what factors affect a person to become a problematic gambler and what factors are involved for a person to remain a normal gambler. These two factors are generally social and psychological and obviously will affect each individual differently. The video focuses on Las Vegas, one of the largest gambling sites, and aims to find what the line between normal gambling and problematic gambling is and how a person's behaviors can put them in one of the two categories. In the video, the main idea is showing how it is so hard to quit gambling once a person starts. Since the "high roller" players are treated so well, they often spend a lot of money and often stay longer then the average person or visit more frequently when compared to the average person.

Even though she does not get "special" treatment like other casino visitors, her personality traits contribute to the fact that she cannot stop gambling. The textbook focuses on how age, sex and socioeconomic factors all affect a persons want to gamble but also if they are able to stop once they start gambling. Another example of how age, sex and socioeconomic status affects gambling is with the game of choice. A wealthy, older individual will most likely gamble with a casino while a younger, lower economic status individual will gamble with lottery tickets if they even gamble at all. Overall, the online film and the textbook agree with each other on the personality traits that allow a person to become addicted to gambling. These sources also focus on studying individuals who gamble rather than just the concept of gambling.
