Problem Statements Instructions Using one of the topics from your Assignment 1, create a general problem statement and a specific problem statement. In order to do this, you will need to do a little research on the topic chosen, and use those resources within your statements. The Dissertation Manual for the DBA program states the following regarding problem statements: The problem statement must begin, “The general problem to be addressed is…”. The problem statement represents a gap between existing literature in the doctoral candidate’s cognate field and actual business practice. The problem statement describes the overall research problem being addressed and indicates why it is important to the practice of management. State the general problem first and then state the specific problem being considered. The general problem is the overarching business problem being addressed while the specific problem is a narrowly focused sub-set of the general problem that once studied, provides insight into the general problem. As an example: The general problem to be addressed is the high level of turnover in the healthcare industry which is resulting in loss of revenue and profits. Jones (2014) stated that employee turnover in the health care industry averages 46% across the nation. According to Smith (2013), employee turnover contributes to loss of both revenue and customers. The specific problem to be addressed is that employee turnover at a medical services company, located in a metropolitan area on the West Coast, is unacceptably high when compared to the national employee turnover rates in the Healthcare Industry. The problem statement should be clear and concise with a target of 250 words, and the general problem must be supported with multiple primary sources. There should be an APA formatted title page. An introduction, or background, section would normally be a level one heading preceding that of the problem statement. That section is not needed. Rather, begin with a level two heading of Problem Statement. The entire assignment problem statement section should be approximately 250 words. A reference page for your citations should be included, and does not count towards the word limit.
