Question 1.
We have read about the three main crime data collection systems in the United States: the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), and the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS).
This assignment will have you examine some statistics from these systems in more detail. The goals of this exercise are to get you to see what the data actually look like, to make your own evaluations of these statistics, and to appreciate how difficult it is to measure crime. The two websites used in this assignment are the FBI's UCR and the Bureau of Justice Statistics., are also valuable resources for criminal justice professionals.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation makes the Uniform Crime Reports available to the public every year on its website. Review the information in Table 1 of the 2015 https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/tables/table-1
In addition to the data table above, review the Table 10 of the 2015 report and identify your local community. (for my community, look for Bell county) https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/tables/table-10/table-10-state-pieces/table_10_offenses_known_to_law_enforcement_texas_by_metropolitan_and_nonmetropolitan_counties_2015.xls
Use the information from the module readings to answer the following questions.
• Based solely on the information in this table, do you think there is a lot of crime in the U.S.?
• What information from this table did you use to make your evaluation?
• How does your local community compare with the national data for 2015? Were you surprised by the local data? Why or why not
