Instruction
1. Go to the Natural Hazards Center website on the World Wide Web: https://hazards.colorado.edu
2. Click “Research" tab and select "Quick Response Grant Program" to learn about how social scientists can participate in disaster research at the center.
3. Click "QR Archives" (under "Quick Response Research Reports") and familiarize yourself with some of the research studies that have been conducted and written about by social scientists affiliated with the Natural Hazards Center.
4. Choose two reports that addresses subjects that interest you
5. Answer the following questions:
a) What research question (or problem) did the researcher choose to study?
b) What research methods (data gathering tools) did the researcher use to collect data?
c) What were the findings of the research?
d) How significant were the findings in contributing to our understanding of disasters?
6. Submit a two or three page written report for each quick response report (in other words, your total work should be 4-6 pages long) to me via BlackBoard’s SafeAssign (do NOT email it) no later than Saturday, July 6, 11:59PM.
7. PLEASE NOTE: Turnitin provides a "matching" score. For example, a score of 20% means that 20% of the submitted assignment matches material in the database and 80% of the text is either original or not in the database. Please keep in mind that Turnitin does not tell what context of outside source materials is used in the paper, therefore the matching score does not necessarily indicate plagiarism (for example, Turnitin does not identify legitimate quoting from outside sources). As a standard rule, an acceptable Turnitin score could be as high as 20%. Scores in excess of 20% indicates that the student has misused or relied too much on outside sources. If your score is higher than 20%, please revise your paper.
8. Please create ONE (1) single document in Word containing both reports. Make sure to identify the source of your reports in their bibliographies.
9. Spacing: Double-spaced. Font: 12.
10. NOTE: Submitting papers from/for another course is NOT permitted (even if you were the author of the paper). This act is not considered plagiarism; instead, it is considered cheating resulting in a failed score in the assignment. (Links to an external site.)
11. IMPORTANT: This assignment represents 13% of your total course grade. Please note that for every day that you are late, four percent (4%) of your total course grade will be deducted, so please submit your assignment on time.
12. All references and papers must be in APA/MLA style.
