Compose a 5-paragraph essay that examines and critiques three positive ideas that you have found by analyzing representative short story from The Harlem Renaissance: either Hurston’s “Sweat” or Ellison’s “King of the Bingo Game.” This course revolves around proper formatting of your essays - an introduction (using the "Funnel Technique"), three body paragraphs (that begin with Topic Sentences), a solid conclusion paragraph (that ends with a "Clincher" sentence), and, of course, the absolutely spot-on use of MLA Style documentation, i.e. The SQP Format. (Signal phrases, Quotations,) if you are to quote anything from the short story make sure its in quotations and you lead into the quote by using a signal phrase (example: The author writes,...) This essay should include 5 paragraphs: An Introduction paragraph, 3 body paragraphs with topic sentences(relating to the topic in the intro) and a solid conclusion paragraph that wraps up the entire essay and reinstates the main idea in the introduction.

  • This is what the professor said: Good morning, Mitri.  I have looked over your paper, and there seems to be an issue. Some of the wording sounds as if it has been gleaned from sources - yet not given enough credit.  For example, you begin your first two body paragraphs with TOPIC SENTENCES!!   Yes!!   This is excellent, but even within these, some of the wording sounds “heightened” as if you are taking some words that you have read and placed them within the topic sentences.  Also, you really need to break down three KEY POINTS that made the story stand out for YOU! It seems as if you’re retelling the story and this shouldn’t be!

  • Do these topic sentences make sense??    You don’t have to use these, but they are guidelines for composing a unified critical analysis paper.  Also, you need to include at least one (and better would be two) sources from the AVL’s databases on the story, or its characters, or at least The Harlem Renaissance.
