We have discussed how criminological theories can work at multiple levels of analysis—micro, meso, and macro. The anomie and strain theories covered are especially flexible with respect to these levels of analysis. The goal of this assignment is to reinforce your understanding of how similar theoretical concepts can be used to explain different kinds of social phenomena. Although Durkheim’s initial formulation of anomie was a macro-level theory, 20th-century strain theorists have adapted some of his ideas to explain crime at both the micro and macro levels. •Choose one version of strain theory and describe how it explains crime at both levels. •Evaluate the strengths and limitations of these explanations. •Discuss whether the theory works equally well at both units of analysis, or if it is better suited for one versus the other. •Use examples to substantiate your response.
