Project: Is It Love/Match.com
Match.com is a paired project. You will need to find a classmate with whom you may work for this project. This project is a culmination of the skills you have learned in this class. You will demonstrate your ability to identify facts, inferences, assumptions, underlying beliefs, and fallacies. You will also be illustrating your skill in determining connotations of words. It is vital to bear in mind that this is an academic assignment providing you the opportunity to apply the skills and techniques you have learned in this class to a real-world experience. While it may not be a comfortable experience for some, remember, critical thinking is not typically comfortable. It is my hope that you relax and enjoy the process.
While you will be using an internet source for this activity, be mindful that it is merely a tool to be used for the completion of this activity. Begin by creating a “dummy” email account that will be used only for this project. This will prevent you from having your regular email spammed. After creating the dummy email, go to the Match.com website and begin the registration process. You will be asked to create a bare-bones account on Match.com; however, you are NOT to publish it during the course of this project. [NOTE: To publish it is an expense and you do not need to publish to participate in and complete this activity.]
There are several documents you will be asked to use in the course of this activity. I have listed and attached these documents separately.
First, download and print out a copy of each of the attached documents. Then, read through the documents to familiarize yourself with them.
Step 1: Next, you will create a basic Match.com profile. Look for and print up two good Match.com profiles. The gender is not an issue at this stage. What you are looking for is examples of what you think are good profiles that give a good idea of what that person is like. Typically more descriptive content is preferable to brief cryptic descriptions. When you have located two good samples from the Match.com website, study the two profiles. NOTE: Remember to deactivate your Match.com account as soon as you have printed up the two good profiles to study.
Step 2: After studying these profiles, you will create your own personal profile. Please NOTE, this is not done on Match.com. It is a separate typewritten document. See number two on the Is It Love instruction sheet for directions on how to construct this document.
Step 3: After completing your personal profile, you will need to find a partner in the class and exchange your personal profiles with each other. With your partner’s personal profile, you will begin the matchmaking process. First you need to analyze your partner’s profile. To do this, you will use the Match.com profile analysis form.
Steps 4 & 5: After analyzing and studying your partner’s profile, you will use your imagination to create an ideal match for your partner. Once you have created your partner’s ideal match, you will create a Prezi presentation. See number five on the Is It Love instruction sheet for detailed directions.
Step 6: Post your Prezi and submitting the following documents: 1) a copy of your personal profile, 2) a copy of your partner’s profile, 3) your partner’s profile analysis form, 4) a copy of the ideal match profile which you created for your partner.
