Assignment 1 Suppose you are a department head for the city government in which you live (or another city, if you wish) and you sit on a committee with other department heads (i.e., police chief, utility director, etc.). The purpose of the committee is to resolve problems and discuss issues related to human resources. Recently, the assistant city manager met with your committee and mentioned a conference he will attend with the human resources director. The conference theme is human resources, and the assistant city manager and human resources director have been asked by the conference organizers to lead one session on the topic of recruitment. They will prepare their own PowerPoint presentations and speaking notes, but they are reaching out to your committee to help them think about how to develop a brochure to give to participants. They want the brochure to discuss best practices for recruitment in public agencies and/or nonprofit organizations (rather than recruitment practices in the city government in which you work). You volunteer to put this brochure together. Specifically, the audience of the brochure is public sector and nonprofit managers and administrators who wish to recruit and hire the best employees; you aim to create a brochure that clearly discusses concepts related to recruitment. Using material from the readings this week, and other pertinent sources, if you wish, create a 2-page tri-fold brochure on this topic in 11 to 12-point font. Use the brochure template in this course for this assignment. Find photos online and add them to the brochure. Your goal is to produce a brochure that your colleagues will happily share with the conference attendees. Include sources, as well as photo credits and links to the photos, at the end of the brochure, in 9-point font. Length: 2 pages (Use the brochure template provided in the Books and Resources for this Week) Resources: Include a minimum of three scholarly resources.
Assignment 2 - This week, return to the fictional committee you are a part of in your role as a department head for the city government in which you live (or if you wish, a different city). The committee discussed the compensation and development of the city government’s office staff. When your colleagues expressed concern about their lack of expertise in this area, you volunteered to conduct some analysis of material related to this topic to brief your colleagues on this topic. The committee chair asked you to present your findings in a memo form. To develop an effective memo, you decide to discuss five key points related to this topic that you learned from this week’s readings. Write this memo (2-3 pages) in a way that presents your knowledge on this topic. Address it to the committee chair (Mr. Xing) and your other department head colleagues. Cite the sources that you use at the end of the memo.
Length: 2-3 pages
References: Include a minimum of three scholarly resources.
