Instruction
In the paper, you will answer a total of two essay questions. One question from Part A and the other question from Part B.
The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how much you have learned throughout the modules of this course. So, it is important that your answers illustrate your depth of understanding. You should define all terms related to criminological theories and thoroughly explain the theories used in your answers.
Your answer to each question should be 1500 words (not counting words in the reference and cover page), typed double-spaced using 12-point font and one-inch margins. All references must be fully cited. You should use the APA style for writing and citations.
Part A
Answer the following questions:
1. Explain the different units of analysis at which criminological theories work. Assess the state of our knowledge about each of those levels. Use examples from theories covered in this course to support your answer. What area(s) need(s) further attention from criminologists? Explain why these areas need to be explored further.
Part B
Answer one of the following questions:
1. Find a recent (from the past 12 months) article on the New York Times website (http://www.nytimes.com/) regarding a contemporary crime or criminal justice issue. Briefly summarize the content of this article. You should also include a full reference including URL. Next, select two criminological theories from those that you have learned in this course ( eg Social bond or social control theory, General theory of crime, General Strain theory, Wikstrom’s Situational action theory, Thornberry’s interactional theory etc).
• Discuss how each of these theories would contribute to understanding the issue in the article and/or refute the claims made in the article. Be sure to fully explain the theories and how they relate to your article.
• Which theory do you think is more relevant to your article and why?
