For essays 1, 2, 3, and the Final Research Paper, you will research and formulate arguments about a specific problem related to Internet culture, digital technology, and/or networked spaces. (Diggit Magazine has a helpful wiki article defining "digital culture." (Links to an external site.)) You can choose, for example, a specific problem related to online identity, privacy, addiction, dangers (sexual predators, distracted driving), gaming, bullying, inequality (social divisions, access).
You will choose your own research topic and write about the same topic for all of these papers, so it is important that you select a topic that interests you and that can sustain your attention for the remainder of the semester.
The purpose of this discussion is to guide you through some preliminary research to see what kinds of conversations are going on now about digital technology, and to see which conversations you might be interested in joining. You will not be required to choose your research topic from the articles you find in this assignment; this assignment is purely for you to see what kinds of problems are being discussed now in the world of digital culture and media, and for you to get a preliminary sense of what you might be interested in.
(1) Browse through media websites and find 5 interesting articles or talks
Browse the mainstream media websites listed below, and after browsing through some articles on the sites, identify FIVE interesting articles that discuss a PROBLEM related to Internet culture. (I'm asking for five articles total, not five articles from each site. It's fine with me if you choose more than one article from one site. You can also explore different topics; you don't need to find five articles on the same topic.)
You are not required to find an article from EACH of these sources; just browse through some and find FIVE articles/talks on Internet-related PROBLEMS that you find most interesting.
Also, the problem may not be immediately apparent from the headline; you may actually have to read some of the articles!
(2) For each of the 5 articles, identify some information
For each of the FIVE articles/talks, please write the following (in a bulleted/numbered list, or any logical way that makes sense to you):
- The title and author of the article or talk
- The date the article/talk was published, the periodical or website on which it appears, and the URL
- A summary of the article (3 sentences minimum) that identifies a PROBLEM related to Internet culture
Preliminary Research:
Research Topic: How influential the internet addiction affect people? (3 parts: Physical effects, health effects and body behavior effects.)
Research Key words: Influence from internet. Internet addiction. Internet affect teens.
