Instruction
"Success comes down to diligent research, precise querying, excellent writing, deadline-hitting, and being easy to work with." Would you say that writing in college prepares you to be successful at magazine writing? In your response, specifically address the success factors Schecter names.
The chapter describes three common mistakes writers make when querying. Briefly name those mistakes. Were you surprised to hear about those mistakes? Explain your answer.
“As a writer, you must be willing to invest in yourself to build your career.” Schecter describes buying his own airfare to New York to do a story that he didn’t make any money off of. But, two vital things happened. Have you had such an experience? Describe it briefly. Then tell us what Schecter’s tip looks like in your life today.
In this chapter editors described the kind of writer they love working with. Some of those qualities are the same ones I and other professors like in a writing student. If you’ve ever been told you have one or more of the characteristics named, describe the occurrence and elaborate.
In this chapter Schecter gives advice about exercising patience. He says, “Sending a follow-up before that response time has elapsed sends the message that you don’t do your homework, you don’t respect the process, or you consider yourself more important than other writers.” How can you practice heeding this advice today?
Know your target audience, proofread, read the magazine. Those pieces of advice from one editor sound a lot like they could have come from a college English teacher. Common thought today is that sometimes what you do in school does not apply to what you’ll need to do in the real world. Can you see any other similarities between the advice or guideline you’ve been given for academic writing and those given in this chapter?
Evergreen Topics-Describe what is meant by evergreen topics. Give your reaction to this section.
Research-Give a brief example of research as it is described by Schecter. Does it seem similar to your typical research assignment? Explain your response.
Formality-Schecter gives a good tip about formality when writing to editors. Does this tip relate to more than just approaching editors? Explain your answer.
