The Mound Builders

Once one of the largest cities on Earth, Cahokia dominate the region surrounding modern day St. Louis, Missouri. This Native American metropolis of nearly 20,000 (a population larger than London, England at the time) was the cultural center of what we know as the Mississippian People. The city peaked between A.D. 1050 and 1200 before an abrupt decline. Many questions remain regarding the decline of this once great civilization; however, they have left behind a lasting legacy through the archeological remains, best known for the massive mound structures left behind. Discussion Prompt After researching this culture, you will provide a post that addresses the following issues: Describe the Mississippian culture of Cahokia. Consider the how the climate and geography of the region may have affected these people. How were they able to sustain such a large population? Consider factors such as: Agricultural Surplus Division of Labor Trade and Transportation Networks Natural resources Cultural practices Architecture Science and Technology Population Densities 3. Identify a similar cultural site here in Texas. Then, compare and contrast it to the Mississippian of Cahokia. Discuss some of the more significant similarities and differences of these societies.
