Instruction
PART A: Module 4: Discussion 1 -- High Incidence Disabilities II: EBD, ASD, & Communication Disorders
The following discussion questions were designed to help you more closely examine the nature and characteristics of students with EBD, ASD, and communication disorders (i.e., speech and language). Your response to each of the discussion questions below will help you to identify common traits among the three disabilities, while simultaneously allowing you to pin-point their unique and distinguishing features. By having a better understanding of each student's unique characteristics and needs, you will be able to provide special services and supports that are appropriate and effective.
Instructions:
Provide a written response for each of the discussion questions below:
1. How do you distinguish disordered behavior from “normal” childhood roughhousing, pranks, tantrums, and/or moodiness?
2.When does a communication difference become a communication disorder?
3.The authors of the journal article, Big Ideas in Special Education: Specially Designed Instruction, High Leverage Practices, Explicit Instruction, and Intensive Instruction, defined the terms and methods often used when creating specially designed instruction for students with disabilities. Based on what you learned about the unique needs and characteristics of children with EBD, ASD, and communication disorders, to what extent would special education teachers be able to apply the instructional methods described in the article?

Answer all questions thoroughly, following the APA guidelines when citing references from the book and other sources. Your response to each question must be a minimum of 3-4 sentences and clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors. Students are reminded to use respectful language that is void of any derogatory terms or slurs. These instructions are to be applied to both posts--your initial response and feedback provided to your peers. (WILL NEED TO RESPOND TO TWO CLASSMATES)
PART B: Article Critique
As part of the Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) principle of IDEA, schools are required to provide specifically designed instruction to address the needs of the child with a disability. Such prescribed instruction is outlined in the child’s IEP. Specifically designed instruction (SDI) comprises several steps whereby the curriculum content, delivery of instruction, or methods used might be changed to match the needs of the students. The assigned journal article provides an overview of the processes or specific steps involved when creating SDI for each student.
Instructions:
Read and submit a critique of the following journal article:
