In a well organized essay of a recommended 1500-2000 words in length (a three-hour response for the in-class essay, 2000-2500 for the out-of-class essay), identify and discuss (i.e., explain the how so? of) at least five significantly different features of modern/post-modern American literature as they manifest themselves in at least five significantly different modernist/post-modernist works by at least five significantly different modernist/post-modernist authors from the list of those features, works, and authors discussed so far in this class this semester. Both the in-class response and the out-of-class response should make substantive use of textual evidence. Use of secondary source material is not required in the in-class essay. In the out-of-class essay, the requirement is to make substantive use of at least three traditional or conventional secondary sources (scholarly books and/or scholarly articles), to use these three sources a total of at least five times, and to provide proper use and documentation for the use of these sources. Note that using more than six sources or using sources more than ten to twelve times may result in a blamably cluttered paper. Please note also that this exam is primarily intended as a test not of that knowledge acquired via research but knowledge and grasp of concepts that have been presented in this class this semester.
The poems that we have used have been the `the Red Wheelbarrow`, `Stopping by woods on snowy evening`, `We Real Cool`, `Beware: Do not read this poem`, `Cherrylog Road`
