Test 2
Rubric:
Format-20%- Did you work on making a presentation that is easy for the grader to follow [Note how I am formatting this]
Meaningful detail content-60%- Did you provide the who, when, where, why in detail that a reader or grader understands what was happening and why it was happening? The danger to some is that they just put date after date that the flow of the story is lost. You need to read what you have written and ask yourself is it interesting. If not, rewrite it. There is a great gap between the writing ability of the students in this class. I am not an English teacher who feels that my job is to teach you to write, but I am a history teacher who expects students to work on communicating that they understand the assignment and give college-level responses to it.
Sources-15%- Last time I allowed you to turn your sources in separately. This time unless they are a part of the paper submitted it will cost you at least a letter grade!
Grammar-5%- Did you run spell check? Did you read what you wrote? It has been literally 50 years since I first graded college tests/papers. Over that time period I have watched comma rules change, spelling change, and witnessed people edit what others have written to the point that I have returned to my basic principle- did you answer the question? Just read what you write, have others read it, do not call George Washington George and answer the question.

This web page lists the compromises and/or events that centered around the issue of slavery and taxes (tariffs).
There are 8 events listed.
Your assignment is to discuss each one of the 8 in greater detail than he did. You must cite this as one of your sources. Your paper may well be improved by including relevant pictures. I am particularly looking for discussion on the economic issues involved. The issue behind the moral issue of slavery was the economic effect of tariffs. [ High tariffs were good for the manufacturing interest of the North and bad for the agrarian interest of the South because of reciprocal tariffs. Your text is helpful and again I will create a discussion where you all can share sources. To some this may look like a hard assignment. Others will see it as an opportunity to learn and demonstrate their ability to understand our past.
Example of what I want. Use numbers and bolding to make sure you cover everything. You may give your sources after each of the 8 events, or you may do it all at the end. However, the sources need to be part of the paper you submit. Frankly, it is easier to do it after each event. I do not want an essay that does not have bolding and numbers. Pictures are a plus. What I am asking you to do is basically make a presentation in writing to me that is easy to evaluate. In many jobs the ability to communicate your ideas where the "boss" can understand it is the key to getting ahead. I know the question will be asked-how long? Most in the past who have done well did a page to a page and half on each topic and had a small picture on each topic. The key is having other sources such as text book and other valid internet sources.
