  • Essay 2 - Applying the Power Paradox to a Real Example Background: Keltner in his book argues there is a core problem in social life: the qualities that allow individuals to gain power get reduced by being in power. Many public figures who can increase the common good (or convince others that they can) find themselves out of power after they become too focused on their own good. Keltner contrasts the old style of power (the Machiavellian), which is about empowering oneself through force, fear, and tricks, with the new one, which is about empowering others by improving their lives.
    User_23494 | Sep 30, 2019, 23:59 PM
  • Task: Explore the rise of a powerful figure from American public life of your choice using Keltner's observations on power. First, explain how this person used or did not use the principles of gaining power described in our book - were these the old style (Machiavelli's) or the new style (Keltner's) or a combination? Second, argue whether you think this figure's rise and use of power once he or she had power proves Keltner's rule of power principle or is an exception to it.
    User_23494 | Sep 30, 2019, 23:59 PM
  • Possible choices: The best choices are people who have been covered a lot in the media and for a long time and are currently still alive (historical figures can work but are harder to find sources on sometimes). It could be a politician, business leader, scientist, activist, or celebrity. Guidelines: - Your thesis or thesis statements should cover both the explanation and argument parts of the question. - You need to quote or summarize our book at least three times and at least three sources you find yourself. (explain why these sources are credible). - Make sure your essay and Works Cited pages follow 2016 MLA format. - Use concessive to respond to ideas from people who might disagree with yours. - Essay should be at least 4 pages long
