Discussion 1 . What was the reaction of Americans to the large number of immigrants arriving from Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, in the early 1900's? Why, since the U.S. was a country of immigrants, did the citizens react to immigrants in this manner?
Discussion 2. How much responsibility should the federal government take in guaranteeing its citizens a minimum standard of living? How much is too much? Should we move even further in this direction (such as national health care)? Or should we move back to placing more emphasis on the state, local government, or on the individuals, themselves?
