This video introduces the concept of business risk and risk management. It notes that business risks can generally be classified into two categories: internal (Controllable) and external (Not controllable). Using both categories of risk, develop an analysis of how financial management techniques or policies can be used to mitigate each of the risks. To supplement your risk analysis, you must use at least one article for each of your risk mitigation techniques or policies from the Ashford University Library database.

  • Risk Management can be seen as a way to preserve the assets and earning power of a business against risk or loss. There are four different types of risk that a business may encounter. They are, property, market, employee, and customer risk. These all have different steps a business can take to mitigate these risks or if they cannot be fully mitigated to reduce the amount of risk.

  • Beginning with property risk. Property risk is “The possibility of financial loss occurring as the result of owing a real estate investment. Property risk might arise from such things as liability, legal issues, partner problems that can force a sale, fire or theft, loss of rental income and purchasing property with an imperfect title.” (What is property risk?, 2018). Based off these examples the one we will focus on would be fire or theft. In order to mitigate or reduce the property risk a business owner would have insurance on their property or inventory. In the case of a restaurant they would have insurance on the building (renter’s or owners) in case there was a kitchen fire.

  • The second type or risk is market risk. Market risk refers to the risk involved with investing in the economy. This could be losses due to the overall performance of financial markets. Sources of risk could be recessions, changes in interest rates, or natural disasters. According to the Staff at Investopedia (2018) “Investors can utilize hedging strategies to protect against volatility and market risk. Targeting specific securities, investors can buy put options to protect against a downside move, and investors who want to hedge a large portfolio of stocks can utilize index options.”

  • Another type of risk in business is employee risk. Employee risk can be seen in both big and small businesses. Often time small businesses are more susceptible to this kind of risk because they do not have a human resources department nor the extra money to settle lawsuits. Examples of employee risk are lawsuits due to unlawful termination, work harassment, denied promotion, etc. “Employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) offers protection to small businesses and covers lawsuit costs—whether the company wins the lawsuit or not” (Employee Risk Management, 2017). This can be used for small businesses to protect themselves. Other mitigation techniques include keeping employees up to date on any policy updates or health and well-being requirements. Also, to monitor employees diligently.

  • Finally, the last form of risk is Customer risk. Customer risk can happen any time you communicate with a customer. You open yourself up to a dissatisfied customer. By having dissatisfied customers, you are losing profit because they are then no longer interested in your product. In the article “Managing Customer Risk” the point is made that in today’s competitive market that driving customer loyalty is key to a company’s success. Mitigation techniques could involve loyalty plans for repeat customers or excellent customer service, such as, extended warranties. Mitigating risk for a business is extremely important. The more risks that you open your company up to the less likely you are to succeed and grow. By planning for the worst case scenario you are protecting your organization and it’s employees.
