Instruction
s we progress through this course, we will be examining each part of the writing process, and with each week we'll be getting a bit more in depth about the individual parts that make up an essay. In this Lesson, we're concentrating on two of the most basic components of any form of writing, the paragraph, a collection of sentences united by a main point, and the thesis, an assertion or main claim at the beginning of a piece of writing. We will also be looking at context, the process of establishing a background for understanding an issue. And finally, there's Essay Two, where we will examine what it means to be an American.
One more thing: in this Lesson we will be looking at an issue that people have been arguing about for years - our National Anthem. While looking at this topic, we'll examine both sides of the argument - the main claim - then settle on one point of view that we'll defend.
