Instruction
As we move into the third and final portion of this course I want us to look at how these large macro forces that we have been talking about impact the lives and actions of the individuals living in the cities. Here in these chapters we discuss concepts of what thinkers have wanted cities to be and for people to live within them. While these are frequently idealistic views we also see how less than ideal situations can affect the people that live in cities when we discuss environmental problems. If Chapter 12 is Nature, then Chapter 13 looks at Nurture. This chapter looks at urban policy and governance. I hope that the take from this section is not that political ideology X is better than other political ideology Y because this is frequently reductionist and does not reach resolution on many of the problems urban areas face today. I do realize that we will all have our preferences and think some forms are “right” but let us try to move our discussions beyond preference and ideology. Now that I have said that, let us get positively reductionist in a little game I will call Nature or Nurture. I say this tongue in cheek of course, but for your individual post choose either nature (environmental problems) or nurture (Ideology of Privatism). Nature: choose a news story of a local environmental problem and describe the problem and what makes it a sociospatial issue. Provide a link to the news story for others to reference. Nurture: describe what is the ideology of privatism, give at least one limitation of this ideology and provide an example of how the limitation(s) have had consequences to a city you are familiar with.
