The business practices of the film industry, television networks, and radio stations are contingent upon what the owners and programmers feel will work to produce an audience of listeners or viewers.
It has been said by some who work in the industry that "nobody knows anything." This is an interesting statement considering the amount of money that is spent attempting to figure out what an audience will enjoy as entertainment. Major monetary marketing efforts, and the rise of expensive programming consultants hired to probe the likes of a potential audience are common today in broadcasting. There is on-going research aimed at increasing audience share, or attempting to create new, original programming. Of course, everyone has an idea of what he or she thinks will work as a program entity.
The film industry regards the 'opening weekend' box office to determine if a film is a hit or miss. Careers are made or lost on films produced by various studios. And in today's climate of film making, more than one studio is usually involved in funding the production. Just look at all the logos at the beginning of a film showing various companies involved in getting the movie to exhibition. Even 'A' list actors sometimes cannot carry a film to success, so in essence, every film is a gamble. It goes back to 'nobody knows nothing' with regards to a film's success.
Considering this, answer the following questions as they pertain to programming:
1 - If you could program a radio station, what type of format would you be inclined to implement?
Music, talk, maybe special sports as examples...what would it be and why do you think it would attract an audience?
How would it be programmed during the hour? (Think about the radio listening assignment you just completed to help you with this question)
2 - If you were given an opportunity to pitch an idea to a TV network, what do you think it might be? What would be the justification for your idea in attempting to attract an audience?
3 - What attracts you to a particular film? Is it the stars, the storyline, word-of-mouth, or is it a sequel to a previous blockbuster hit?
Think about how you will answer these questions. Be sure to give some detail. Be specific and elaborate on your answers to receive full credit.
