I need somebody who is really good at knowing how to use adobe illustrator and finding a design that works for laser cutting. Essentially I am making 2 paper lanterns and I need one design off the internet and one design hand drawn (if you could make multiple designs so I have backups just in case that would be great if not no worries). When doing this my teacher said if the design has to many small tiny line they will swivel up which is bad and won't work and if it has to many small pieces and parts that are held together by a piece or line they will fall threw also won't work. I Need this done by Sunday evening because I will be using the designs you gave me to start laser cutting them in class on Monday. I need 2 files from you to open in Illustrator. One is the original work, with everything you did on that file, all the layers, all the work ect...On the second file, I only need the patterns, and the shapes cutouts. Everything else can be deleted that is what my teacher said.

Instruction sing the provided templates, design two lanterns. One that uses found patterns (either from online or from a photo). One that uses patterns that you create using shape-making and drawing tools within Illustrator. Templates: cube box.ai (Links to an external site.) cylinder lantern.ai (Links to an external site.) The templates above are set up with separate layers, some of which will be locked. Here are the layers and descriptions of what they will be used for: Your Patterns: This is where you will create the patterns that will let light through on the sides and bottoms of the lantern. Patterns generally need to be made a little bit larger than the face where they will go, so that they can be trimmed to exactly the right size. Pattern Limits: These are shapes that will be used as “Clipping Masks” to trim your patterns to the right size to fit on each side of the lantern. They are designed to leave some extra cardstock at the corners for strength. Fold Lines: These are lines that will be used to score the lantern shape where the cardstock needs to be folded. Main Cut Lines: These are the lines that will be used to cut out the main lantern shape. In this project, students will design and execute paper lanterns that will be displayed on the Pioneer Circle during the TWU Festival of Lights (Links to an external site.). Lanterns will have piercings that let light through in patterned shapes and use negative and positive shapes in the designs to create compelling light effects. Lanterns will be designed using Illustrator to create vector files. These vector files will be executed on a lasercutter. Students will use a basic lantern template and add their vector patterns. Once lasercut, lanterns will be assembled, glued, and embellished by students. During the Festival of Lights our lanterns will be installed on strings of outdoor lights to decorate and add dramatic lighting effect to the Pioneer Circle for the Festival of Lights. The Festival of Lights is a winter celebration that highlights the importance of light symbolically across cultures and religions at the darkest part of the year. For this project students are asked to consider the subject matter for their lanterns as a symbolic interpretation of light. Rather than focusing on seasonal specific decorations that are specific to dominant religions or cultural traditions, how might light as a symbol be interpreted as a universal message that unites cultures across religions. Student Learning Outcome: Demonstrate understanding and successful execution of basic functions in Illustrator Convert bitmap into vector files by tracing Design vector files for successful lasercutting Apply craftsmanship skills in folding, gluing and assembling a 3D lasercut form Project Requirements Students will use a Digital Process Journal to document design ideation. Students will turn in 2 complete lantern designs, and cut and fabricate ONE of them. File will use the following naming convention: LASTNAME_LANTERN_1.AI and LASTNAME_LANTERN_2.AI GETTING THE PATTERN SET UP SO THAT WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET USING OUTLINE PATH What shows up on your screen in Illustrator may look right, but that does not mean that the laser will cut it so that it has the pattern you see, or that there will even be a pattern that holds together. A good example of this is that a line – a “stroke” in the parlance of Illustrator – can have a color, and it can have thickness, but all the laser cutter will use when cutting is the vector line that runs down the middle of the stroke. You can view your Illustrator file as only the vectors by holding down cmd/ctrl and pressing “Y”. Pressing it once will toggle the view to vector lines only, no fill, no thickness, no color. Pressing again will switch it back to a regular view. When you do that with a thick line (or any line with a stroke thickness value, but it will be easiest to see with a thick line), you will see the problem when it comes to having the laser cutter slice out a shape that matches what the image looks like on the screen. You can fix this issue on individual strokes by going to Object < Path < Outline Stroke, which will create a new vector that outlines the visible width of the stroke, and makes it into a shape. Try that, and then check the vector view with cmd/ctrl—Y. Unfortunately, that does not fix the issue when multiple strokes cross each other, as is often the case in a pattern. To overcome that problem, you can select all of the strokes, right click on them, and choose Make Compound Path. Having done that, you can then choose Object < Path < Outline Stroke, and it will treat the lines as all one line, and there will be no overlaps to the patterns. USING RASTERIZE AND TRACE Another way to have the visual borders become the only vector lines is by using a process of converting the image to a bitmap using “rasterize”, and using “live trace” and “expand” to turn the bitmap into vectors. In effect, that process erases any hidden and crossing vector lines, because it creates new vectors based entirely on contrasting color. The downside of that process is that it can cause loss of detail, some off which may not be immediately apparent. FITTING THE PATTERN TO THE PANEL LIMITS When you have a pattern that is larger than the panel limits boundary rectangles, and you want to end up with just the part that fits in the rectangle, there are multiple ways to do this, but the one that seems to work best is to use the Minus Front selection among the Pathfinder Shape Modes. First, you need to have a copy of the panel limit shape you are trying to fit the pattern to, copied from the Panel Limits layer (copy it with the layer unlocked, and then lock it again). When pasting, you need to go to Edit < Paste in Place so that it shows up exactly where it needs to be. Set both the pattern and the rectangle so they have thin black stroke outlines, and no fill. Next, position the Panel limit shape just above the pattern vector shape in the layers panel. Select both shapes. Then Choose “minus front” on the pathfinder shape mode section (top row, second icon). Check to see that the main, interconnected part of the pattern connects to the flat box form. If, instead, the main pattern will be cut away, undo back and try again, but this time, reverse the layer order of the two items, so that the pattern vector shape is on top. I am so sorry if the instructions are confusing. If we can use at least one cube box, but I would rather you use both cube boxes however it is up to you. I think the cube design/cutout is the only file that uploaded anyways. And remember I need the designs and the two files as well. I don't have any suggestions picked out, nor do I care for what pattern you chose and what pattern you make as long as it is something that I can I use and as long as it works my digital arts teacher will check to see if it works, because if it does not and I don't get to laser cut them on Monday I already will feel behind ans there will probably be no time to cut the designs out I am not a computer person and this looked hard to do!:( So I am really counting that these designs are correct for laser cutting and will work. So please I am very stressed out and am appreciating your time on this project! You should have everything you need now I hope.
