Instruction
According to a 2012 study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, adolescents are consuming more calories, fat, and sugar when they eat meals outside the home. However, an interesting point was made in the article—many parents have the perception that full-service restaurants (those with waiters/waitresses, ex: Olive Garden, Applebees, etc.) are a healthier alternative for kids than fast-food restaurants (ex: McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc.).
Most restaurants are providing nutritional information for their meals, including “kids’” meals. Provide an example of a kid’s meal from a full-service restaurant and a comparable meal from a fast-food restaurant.
1) Does the full-service meal appear to be healthier than the fast-food meal?
2) What are the primary sources of the differences? (i.e. calories, fat content, sugar content, etc.) You will need to examine the restaurant's menu nutritional information, generally provided on their website. Please provide numbers with your comparisons.
3) Why do you feel the perception that a full-service restaurant is healthier exists?
4) Do these results surprise you?
