Step 1: Select an Ethical Dilemma from the Ethical Scenarios listed below:
Ethical Scenarios 1-5
Scenario#1 - Mortgage System Maintenance Back-Door Scenario: You work for a software company developing a system to process loan applications that would be used by a number of mortgage companies. The systems will contain personal information about loan applicants. You may be required to do maintenance on the systems after they are delivered. As a result, you are considering adding a “back door” or method to easily get into each customer’s system after they are installed and online at various customer facilities to perform possible maintenance and perform software upgrades. Note: the ability to gain remote access to running systems at each customer site is not in your company’s specification or requirements since your company has not considered how the system you are developing would be maintained. At this point you have not discussed the “back door” remote access concept with your manager or anyone on your team. What would you do?
Scenario#2 - Surveillance System Scenario: A factory manager has hired your company to develop and install a surveillance system in a factory. The system includes cameras small enough not to be noticed. Supervisors and security personnel can view images and record audio in real-time on monitors in a control room. The system will also store video. The factory manager has not disclosed the placement locations for the new system. The factory manager says the purposes are to watch for safety problems and for theft of materials by workers. What issues, specifications, and policies will you discuss with the factory manager or your company? What would you do?
Scenario#3 Extended Stay Scenario: Your Company has asked you to attend an independent review at another division of your company located on Miami Florida that will take place in four weeks. The purpose of the independent review is to review the software being developed by a team in Miami who is looking for someone with your expertise to evaluate their approach used on a new proposal. The review is on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. You agree to support the review and immediately make travel plans to travel down Tuesday morning, flying back Thursday evening. You also book a hotel and rental car for the same time period. After making your reservations you post on social media that you are supporting your company’s new proposal by attending a review in Miami Florida. A friend who lives in the Miami area sees your post and contacts you about hanging out over the weekend. You decide to extend your stay thru the weekend for the purpose of visiting a friend by canceling your Thursday return flight and making a new return flight for Sunday evening. You will stay with your friend over the weekend so you don’t need a hotel. You figure that you will also just work remotely for the Friday before the weekend, or just tell your manager that you will take a vacation day after returning Thursday evening. What issues should you be concerned about regarding your time and submitting travel reimbursement expenses to your company? What would you do?
Scenario#4 Software Re-Use Scenario: You work for a company that develops security products for the automobile and home security markets that makes use of a person’s thumbprint to unlock doors. You started with the company approximately two years ago, and are familiar with some portions of the software used to support the company’s automobile and home security thumbprint security applications. A local security company has a new national contract to modernize security spaces at several federal government agencies, including federal prisons. The security company wants you to develop a thumbprint-operated lock system for high security areas. Your new boss says that your company needs to leverage existing software developed for the automobile and home security market to “get within the cost box” (meet cost objectives) of the new contract’s extremely competitive contract. You are not familiar with all existing software and there is no documentation or specification for the current system. The contract represents a huge opportunity for you and your team. What would you do?
Scenario#5 Software Cost Estimation Scenario: You work for a company that develops a popular Flight Simulator 3D game that runs on a number of common gaming systems. Your company is approached by AirJet, a manufacture of small commercial aircraft, to develop a new low-cost 3D flight simulation training capability for their newest line of airplanes. Airjet is looking for a low cost option to training commercial pilots. Your manager puts you in charge of leading up the proposal and informs you that your company has a very good chance to get the contract, assuming that your company comes in under the “Price to Win”. You start by reviewing a “Request for Proposal” (RFP) developed by Airjet in order to gain a better understanding of Airjet’s training system requirements. After reviewing the RFP you realize that there are additional capabilities that will need to be developed and tested, beyond the current software in your flight simulator game. You formulate an estimate and present the estimate to your manager and representatives of Airjet. While Airjet representatives are pleased by the capabilities presented, and your careful consideration for adequate testing, they tell you that you are over their cost budget by 25% and you will need to reduce your estimate by eliminating testing or other features of the system. The contract value is over $100 million and represents a great opportunity for your company and fellow co-workers. However, you are at odds as to how to reduce cost by 25%. You also believe the testing is required to produce a reliable system and the new capabilities outlined in your presentation are not fully understood by your manager or Airjet representatives. What would you do?
Step 3: After selecting a Scenario, title your paper specifying the Scenario, for example: “Ethical Dilemma: Scenario 5”
Step 4: Use the methodology (framework) approached discussed in Chapter 9 of the textbook to identify possible ethical solutions, specifically Brainstorming and Analysis Phase approach. Note: Chapter 9 walks students through several example scenarios where the ethics methodology brainstorming and analysis phases are used to assess ethically acceptable options.
In your introduction, state and explain/define any assumptions used to guide decision making process. [For Example, in 9.3.2 “Protecting Personal Data” ethical dilemma scenario in the text, p. 412, an assumption is made that “the clinic director is likely to be aware of the sensitive information in the records and to know that inappropriate release of information can result in embarrassment for families using the clinic and physical harm to women who use the shelter” (Baase 475).]
You must also show evidence as to how you leveraged the “Two Step” Processing covered in the textbook, specifically:
Step1 - Brainstorming
Be sure to include all people and organizations affected (stakeholders), risks, issues, problems, consequences, benefits and possible actions with magnitude of impact for each action
Step2: Analysis / Impact Assessment Steps
Be sure to identify decision maker(s), rights of stakeholders, consider impact of options on stakeholders (risk, benefits, harm…)
Be sure to offer multiple solutions and consider and explain ethical merits of options (e.g. practicality, courtesy, fairness…)
Also, include a strong conclusion that brings the paper together. Pay attention to grammar and be sure to cite/reference A Gift of Fire Chapter 9 a minimum of three times.
