Instruction
1. Set out Nissenbaum’s transparency paradox for the notice and consent model. Then explain why it doesn’t also undermine the possibility of consenting to medical procedures. Finally, consider what would be involved in applying the practices/institutions/et cetera which allow genuine consent in medicine to the use of personal data.
2. Gatekeeper algorithms, such as those which determine the content you see on Instagram or Facebook, make decisions based on variables which it updates based on what the user does. Using Floridi’s criteria for moral agency, make the case that such algorithms should be considered moral agents. Make sure you discuss how we could/should respond to such moral agents when they cause harm. Then explore at least one problem with understanding moral agency/moral responsibility in the way Floridi proposes.
