Just a rule of thumb when giving credit back to the original author/s: In APA style, you are required to acknowledge every source you use in your paper whether you quoted it, paraphrased it, or just consulted it. All sources must be cited in the references page and in-text citations must be used.
In-Text References
If you quote directly from your source, the standard in text reference is the author’s last name (organizations can also be authors), the year of publication, and the page number the quotation can be found on, preceded by the abbreviation “p.” One observer notes that “the tone of words can be hurtful” (Tannen, 2012, p. 90). If there is no page number, use the paragraph the quotation appears in, with the abbreviation “para.” “Foodborne diseases make about 48 million Americans sick every year – that’s 1 out of every 6 people” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016, para. 1). If you are paraphrasing or consulting the source, you do not need to include the page number. People often misunderstand online communication (Tannen, 2012). If you mention the author in the signal phrase, there is no need to put it in the in text reference. Tannen writes that “the tone of words can be hurtful” (2012, p. 90). If your source has no author, just use a shortened version of the title instead. If there is no date, write n.d. “International espionage was prevalent in the 1990’s in many parts of the world” (“Decade,” n.d., para. 7).
