Book > Engineering Ethics (4th Edition) by Fleddermann
Required Reading
Fleddermann, Chapters 1 & 2.
Focus Points
It is important for engineers and technologists to be aware of their own moral makeup in order to maximize his/her effectiveness when working with others and encountering ethical dilemmas. Therefore, this course will begin with helping you to develop a greater sense of self prior to focusing on the “nuts and bolts” of recognizing and addressing ethical issues.
There are 3 major criteria to define ethical versus non-ethical actions or behavior…
These are:
-Legal Behavior (Legal issues are handled by local, state and federal law and are best managed by lawyers and the legal system in general.)
-Code of Ethics Compliance (Codes of Ethics are managed by the individual professional societies. Some example codes may be found on the Page “Codes of Ethics” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethical_code (Links to an external site.) and Fleddermann, Appendix A)
-Is it the right thing to do? (At the end of the day, when all is said and done, we as engineers and technologists must be able to “look ourselves in the mirror”. We must NEVER compromise our integrity or the safety of any member of society)
