DIRECTIONS
1. Download the Rubric document.
2. Read through the requirements. You most likely won't understand any of it, but that's okay. That's our work until you write your first written quiz :))
3. Then, write a paragraph using all of the 7 words at the end of the document. The paragraph can be about anything. I only need to see you using the vocabulary words properly in a paragraph.
4. Have a favorite dictionary website! I use http://www.merriam-webster.com/ or http://dictionary.reference.com/ Each has a thesaurus AND an AUDIO feature that will play the word so you can HEAR it! Be able to use these words! Let me see them in all assignments if it fits!
5. Download the MLA docs at the top of the "Lessons" Module and be sure the document you submit has a perfect MLA heading and title. The MLA Template should be used as a model. The MLA Setup Directions Doc will help you set your defaults. The MLA Success Doc takes the place of an expensive English handbook and will give you concrete ways to elevate your writing to the collegiate level.
Ingredients to an "A" Written Quiz
1. A FOCUS born of demiurgic1 inquiry and thinking.
-- Use a Topic: Focus form to your title. Academic titles follow this formula.
2. Essay has a sagacious2, 5 PARTS structure.
-- The SET-UP contains pointed and paraphrased definition of chosen/assigned literary theory. It introduces the FOCUS pointedly and directly. See Example.
-- The PROOF contains in-depth reasoning and at least 2 textual citations from the chosen/assigned reading that connect to the literary theory/FOCUS.
-- The EXTENSION extends the FOCUS into a NEW direction or connection using textual citations from a different reading. Lit theory SHOULD NOT be discussed. The new connection should consider theme, setting, character, plot, or some other “formalist” perspective on the two works.
3. Essay is sinewy3, incorporating pointed textual citations source in text when required.
4. Essay shows evidence of perspicacious4 editing and re-visioning.
-- The paper is "thesaura-sized". A minimum of three words per part show that the student is expanding his or her vocabulary with more complex, accurate, and/or academic words.
-- Multiple reads are evident. The student has used the Writing Lab, Tutor.com, or some other academic contact to review the essay and point out areas of confusion.
5. MLA STYLE, with regard to in-text citations and signal phrases, is meticulous5. MLA FORMAT is impeccable6.
-- You will lose 5 points for any MLA mistakes. Have a perfect heading and title. Be sure all citations are properly punctuated and use a signal phrase BEFORE the citation at all times.
-- REFERENCES LIST is duteous7. Cites only sources used if required. Bibliographic citations provide all necessary information -- author(s) name, title, journal of publication, date, page numbers, etc.
Student must incorporate PREVIOUS FEEDBACK into the essay.
