Instruction
1.Provide a summary of each article or book chapter assigned. Summarize the main argument and findings. Include any salient quotes you think are key to the main argument. Treat the summary as a guide so a reader would know where to turn to re-read a particular point (i.e. include page numbers in parenthesis if you want to use a direct quote from the reading to which youare responding. Thisdoes NOT mean filling the pages with direct quotes from the readings).2.After you have gauged and summarized the entire readings, write 2-3 paragraphs critically discussing the readings: their similarities and differences in argument as they relate the theme of that week.3.At the end of theessay and in 1-2 paragraphs, discuss the articles limitations—critically assess the authors’ arguments, the validity of the points they are raising within their article. What did they (not) do well? I want toread your thoughts, and your thoughts are saying,“I love the argument”, “I agree with the author” etc.Think through what you have read and tear through it.4.As we will reviewtheories of mass communication in this class(and as you have started reading), you should think about specificinternational communication theories as yougauge the readings, and where possible, apply them in writing your response essay.
