Project Summary: The Washington "Redskins" Football Team Name Controversy Discussion on some of our society's most current and controversial topic, the ongoing controversy over the use of the name "Redskins" for Washington D.C.'s NFL football team. This is one of the oldest teams in the league, and this team name goes back for centuries. Many sports fans, and members of the public, claim that the name should be kept, out of tradition, and yet there have been an increasing number of citizens, in particular, Native Americans from across the country, voicing their opposition to the use of a word that they consider a serious racial slur against Native American people (similar to the "N" word, to man.) Please read and comment on the arguments put forth in BOTH articles, below, and weigh in on what you think about the persuasive efforts of each side on this issue - should the team change their name to something less offensive? Should the Native Americans offended by the use of this word just "get over it?" Should Americans be okay, out of the idea that "it's just tradition, and no harm is meant here" with the concept of having a high profile professional sports team using a name that happens to be a serious racial slur to many Americans? What do you think? Do Americans have the right, should they have the right, to demand name changes on racially offensive words and terms? Should the Redskins owner, out of respect for Native Americans, willingly change the team's name? http://inamerica.blogs.cnn.com/2013/04/04/native-american-mascots-pride-or-prejudice/ http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/12/us/redskins-controversy/
