Remember, pick only ONE op-ed to analyze for its success or failure as an argument piece of writing. PICK ONLY ONE OF THE BELOW OP-ED ARTICLES TO ANALYZE IN YOUR ESSAY! Remember, your goal in your essay isn't to just agree or disagree with the author of the article you're analyzing; your goal is to look at how the article you pick achieves its purpose (or doesn't) in making an argument on their position on the topic of marijuana legalization in the U.S., through using the tools of persuasion writing effectively, or not. In Essay 2: Do NOT use first person POV in this essay (I statements.) In this essay, you should stick to third person POV (he, she it) and avoid statements such as I agree with this authors terrific use of persuasive writing on the issue of why marijuana should not be legalized. Rather, say After reading this article and analyzing it thoroughly for its excellence in building a position in support of legalizing marijuana, its hard not to agree with the author. What YOU, the writer need to do: after reading the article/essay you have chosen, you will need to ANALYZE that article/essay for its effectiveness as a piece of persuasive writing. In other words, your job is NOT to agree or disagree with the author; your job is to provide an assessment, through the following strategies, of whether this article/essay is effective, or not effective. Does this author win you to their side? Why or why not? Where does the author hit the mark, or where do they lose you? Use the strategies below to focus and write your paper. Remember, you must write from an objective, third person point of you, without personal statements such as I feel or I think. You must also make sure to focus on the article/essay, and not stray into your own ideas on the subject. You will also need to bring in at least THREE passages/quotes from the article and incorporate those into your paper, MLA format style for in-text citations. Your paper must also include a works cited list at the end, of the article/essay you are analyzing. Also be sure your paper has a strong thesis statement, which should be underlined, and focused topic sentences for each paragraph, that should also be underlined. You should use the basic five paragraph essay structure for your paper, as we learned for essay #1, but feel free to add more body paragraphs to build your paper/position of analysis if you need to. Length: each paragraph should be 8-12 sentences in length, and the paper should be somewhere between 3 - 4 pages long. The works cited list (at the end) should be your last page, and a separate page. INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH (must contain the following:) 1.Title of the article chosen to analyze and author name, also, where the article is published. 2.Brief (1-2 sentence) overview of the issue discussed in the article 3.YOUR thesis statement (not the thesis of the article). Your thesis is your conclusion of the effectiveness of the authors writing strategies. (not on whether or not you agree with the authors ideas) 4.And, of course, pull your reader in with a riveting creative hook which could be a question you pose, a thought, or anything that helps them care about your essay from the very start, get a feel for your position, and want to read on. BODY PARAGRAPH #1 1.BRIEFLY summarize the main points of the article you are writing on. This would be the basic 5 ws of the article: who, what, when, where, why. 2.Examine the writers thesis. What position, on the subject, does the writer want readers to agree with? What ideas, points of view, and position on the topic does the author assert? BODY PARAGRAPHS #2-3 Analysis of the article (avoid summary) 1. Discuss the merits and/or manipulative nature of language, evidence and logic (techniques) in the article (do NOT summarize here). 2. Language describe it (example !) and judge its effectiveness in helping the writer prove his/her thesis (whats wrong or right about it?). 3. Evidence describe it (example!) and judge its effectiveness in helping the writer to prove his/her thesis. 4 Logic describe it (example!) and judge its effectiveness in helping the writer to prove his/her thesis. 5. Overall evaluation on how well the writer achieved his/ her purpose in the essay based on your three areas: language, evidence, logic. BODY PARAGRAPH #4 Describe your response to the article. (Remember, avoid those "I" statements.) To what extent do you agree or disagree with the author? How do you justify agreement if the techniques (above in body 2) are questionable? OR How do you justify disagreement if the techniques (above in body 2) are solid? (Remember, to write this paragraph without using I statements.just say your statements/responses in this paragraph directly.its clear that this author really knows how to win their readers over. instead of saying, I feel the author is able to win readers over. CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH #5 Summarize the results of your analysis (restate your thesis in the introduction) and your concluding personal views on the article topic, with final thoughts.
