Project Summary: Week 6 Homework #1 Mock Scenario (50 points) Imagine that you a member of your city's Emergency Management team. You work in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Your city is hosting an outdoor concert in located in the municipal fairgrounds; it is anticipated to be a large event with approximately 2,000 people in attendance, plus the bands, police, and concessions employees. There is parking for the attendees in a single, albeit, large, lot attached to the East side of the fairgrounds. The concert stage is set up on the West side, while concessions are to the North and latrines are to the South. The concert is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.; at 5:07 p.m. the EOC receives an urgent message stating that there has been a bombing at the fairgrounds. The number of injured is unknown, police on the scene have called for backup and medical teams are en-route. The explosion occurred in the southeastern area of the grounds. The bomb is believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED). You are assigned the role of public liaison. Based on the circumstances surrounding the incident and information given, develop a plan of action describing how to approach and communicate with stakeholders (including family of victims), the general public, and the media. Frame this paper as a public statement outlining the above, that you will deliver at the first press conference. Week 7 Homework #2 Crisis Communication Plan Create a Crisis Communication Plan for the organization you were assigned during week 6's mock scenario or you can submit a "topic" (e.g. organization, company, or group you would like to create a crisis communication plan for) to your instructor prior to the due date of this assignment for approval. This can be presented as a paper (Word document) or presentation (PowerPoint). Include what communications channels (e.g. print, electronic, press conference), media outlets (e.g social media, traditional mass media - TV, print, radio), communications vehicles (e.g. press release, radio announcement, PSA). Also, who are the stakeholders, and what communications channels, outlets, and vehicles would be most appropriate for each stakeholder group, and why. Also, include what other organizations you might interface with (e.g. FBI, hospitals, first responders, local law enforcement). All assignments should use APA style, be error-free (including grammar and spelling), have one-inch margins, and include a cover page and a reference page, with sources cited in the text. Example of Crisis Communication Plan Obviously, this Crisis Communication Plan is VERY extensive and detailed. I do NOT expect yours to be as detailed and extensive as this, but this will give a good general idea of what a Crisis Communication Plan should look like. http://www.niu.edu/newsplace/crisis.html
