Project Summary: APA not required The TED Talks video, Don Tapscott: Four principles for the open world (see Webliography for link), discusses how collaboration, transparency, sharing, and empowerment create an open world and open organizations that have greater potential to succeed. Select a recent article from current events (past 90 days) related to a specific aspect of this open world mindset and how an organization is applying one or more of these principles. Write a well-written, two paragraph summary of the article. Include the following: A paragraph summarizing the primary components of the article. A paragraph presenting your analysis of the article and how it is related to our video this week about the open world mindset. Please use parenthetical citations as well as references for your article. SAMPLE RESPONSE from a former student: I truly enjoyed watching the video for this weeks Unit two discussion and I found myself nodding my head and agreeing out loud while watching it. In the TED video, Don Tapscott discusses the new age in which we live and how technology allows for fast, open, and efficient, collaboration. He speaks about children today and their unique exposure to technology. I found this to be such a truth because I have a three-year-old daughter, Gigi, who knows how to navigate an iPad better than my own Mother! In fact, my three-year-old has in fact helped my Mom navigate her tablet! Tapscott stresses that you have to have values as a part of your bones and your DNA as an organization because if you dont, youll be unable to build trust (VIDEO). I definitely feel that this prior statement is correct because we have seen examples and instances of organizations that lacked ethics and moral values and they are no longer in business such as organizations like: Worldcom and Tyco for example . Tapscott goes on to mention that Sharing is about giving up assets and intellectual property (Tapscott, 2012). According to Tapscott, Knowledge and intelligence is power (Tapscott, 2012) is a statement that truly stood out to me. I have also selected two recent articles which I feel are a good example of an organization that creates and enhances and open world mindset. First, there is an organization called ING Direct Canada that does a fantastic job of empowering employeesemployees have no job titles and no offices[a]nyone can talk to anyone and leaders focus on removing obstacles instead of creating them (Morgan, 2013). Additionally, Tesla Motors Inc. is another organization that demonstrates innovation. According to the article written by Gallucci (2014), the company is trying to increase progress and awareness. One approach they are trying is to implement is to have Supercharger stations across the U.S. (Gallucci, 2014) to assist in creating more awareness and efficiency for Tesla owners. To me, the article shows an organization that is willing and eager to collaborate and come up with novel ways to increase competitive edge of the organization. Tesla is showing the ability to collaborate, share and empower their employees to create openness and assist the company in having a greater potential to succeed and compete with cars who run by gasoline. The video mentioned that new technology is sweeping over the world and Tesla is a great example of an organization that is constantly developing innovative ways to suit the needs of our environment and decrease the need for gasoline.
