Project Summary: Write 2 pages to what does James Baldwin mean by “Black English” and why is it important to literature and literary criticism? But we still don’t know what Baldwin means by Black English. Is there more than one English? Is it the subject matter of Baldwin’s language that makes it Black English, or is it something else? Notice too that Baldwin says his “argument has nothing to do with language itself but with the role of language.” How would you define the “the role of language”? In your response, focus on the four African American writers we have read this term: Ralph Ellison, “Battle Royal,” Alice Walker, “Everyday Use,” Jewell Gomez, “Don’t Explain,” and James Baldwin himself, “Sonny’s Blues.” Are these stories examples of Black English? Is any one of the above writers a better example of Black English than the others? Based on your reading, how do we apply Baldwin’s idea to these four writers?
