Project Summary: Alexander Solzhenitsyn Alexander Solzhenitsyn's style of writing is economical and unornamental. This is particularly true of One Day. This would seemingly cause little difficulty in translating One Day were it not for the great amount of prison jargon contained in the dialogues and discussion of life in the camp. The author's motto might well be, "wie es eigentlich gewesen," or "tell it like it is." In believing as he does in honest realism and not the propaganda slogan of "socialist realism," Solzhenitsyn wishes to render the real-life situations he describes in so many of his writings. Pablo Neruda Pablo Neruda is an interesting figure. In many cases he is best known for his palatable and beautiful love poems, but he also wrote historical epics, and overtly political works. Within many of Pablo Neruda's poems one can find a number of different stylistic devices and techniques utilized by Neruda to bring forth his themes and arguments. An abundance of metaphors, similes, hyperboles, and other figurative language is evident in Neruda's poetry. Rhyming schemes, syntax, and diction are some of the literary techniques Neruda uses to further elaborate upon his central themes. Neruda's unique descriptive poetry can be traced back to his intricate imagery and lavish details. All of these techniques and devices are only to bring focus on Neruda's themes nature, love, politics, and human condition. Gabriel Garcia Marquez One of the things that Gabriel Garcia Marquez is known for is his use of magical realism which is used to describe quasi-surrealistic work. This style relies on realistic details and obscure knowledge intertwined with dreamlike dreamlike elements. It also includes abrupt chronological shifts and complex, tangled plots. Magical realism also often includes fairy tales and myths into their works. Sylvia Plath and Alice Walker Plath and Walker both fit into the confessional category, but Alice Walker writes creative nonfiction and Plath writes poetry. Creative nonfiction is different from traditional nonfiction (histories, memoirs, etc.) It generally includes the following attributes: Requires a personal Presence Demands Self-Discovery and Self-Exploration Allows Flelxibility of Form and Takes a Literary Approach Insists on Veracity (Reliably factual--firmly anchored in real experience) Blurs Boundaries between Genres (Brings artistry to information and actuality to imagination-draws upon the expressive aim that lies below the surface of writing) Based on the descriptions of the authors' styles, write a response from ONE of the assigned readings based on some of the definitions and descriptions of the styles. You should write NO LESS than 200 words.
