Instruction
Find/read three (3) related news articles (on a connected/similar relatively recent "current events" topic) from a reputable newspaper (or newspapers) with a national reach/readership (e.g. New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, LA Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Dallas Morning News, The Philadelphia Inquirer, etc.).
The articles can all be from the same paper, or different papers.
Your paper then will be an application of sociological terms, concepts, theories, research to help understand/explain the issue covered by the stories you've selected. All remaining requirements of the paper will be the same.
PLEASE NOTE: Your paper MUST incorporate discussion of this year’s Big Question Topic: “How can I make a difference?”
The TEXT of the paper will be a minimum of five double-spaced typed pages, and a maximum of seven double-spaced typed pages (title page, abstract page and reference page do NOT count in the page total). It will be in full ASA format (see the documents above). The paper will count for 25% of your course grade. The reflection paper is DUE on or before Wednesday April 8, 2020.
The content should consist of a little description of the event, but should be mostly thoughtful reflection and integration with other things you’ve read and learned in this class. (See the Process of Reflection document below.) That is, you have to make explicit, substantive and intelligent use of sociological terms, concepts, theories, etc.. Use and proper citation of your texts is REQUIRED. The relevant readings from your texts might occur later in the semester so you are STRONGLY ADVISED to consult with me prior to writing the paper for ideas about how to make those connections.
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, organization and proper citation will all count. A grading rubric will be posted separately. You must submit a Microsoft Word copy in the assignment box below.
