Instruction
Be sure to utilize module 6 and module 7 attached power point presentations
Part 1: Module 6: Discussion 1 -Group Problem Solving
Chapters 5, 6, and 9 of your textbook further examine group dynamics and the need for group problem solving. To deepen your understanding and to examine this information in a new perspective, the following discussion questions are provided.
Instructions:
Provide a written response to each of the discussion questions listed below:
1. What if you are engaged in a team effort to solve a problem related to a student and the team members cannot agree on the problem itself? How will you help facilitate problem identification so that the team can move on to generating potential solutions for the agreed-upon problem?
2. Consider the five conflict management styles described in the textbook (Compromising, Collaborating, Competitive, Avoiding, and Accommodating). Which is your predominant style? Provide a rationale for your choice. Remember that no one style is “right” or “wrong.”
You must respond to two classmates post
Part 2: Module 7: Discussion 1 - Interacting with Others and Special Considerations for Collaborative Consultation
Chapters 10, 11, and 12 of your textbook and the PowerPoint lecture examine several additional types of collaboration in which you may be asked to participate in today's schools. To deepen your understanding and to examine this information in a new perspective, the following discussion questions are provided.
Instructions:
Below are two scenarios involving a teacher, a paraeducator, and one or more students. Read each, imaging yourself in the role of the teacher. Provide a written response to explain how would you respond to the scenario.
1. You are a special education teacher in an 8th grade varying exceptionalities U.S. history class. One of your students, a young man, is identified with autism. His behavior is in no way disruptive, but he does not begin or continue work unless prompted to do so. He has a one-on-one paraeducator assigned to accompany him to all classes throughout the school day. In your class, the para most often sits in the back of the room on her phone, ignoring the student. In one instance, her phone rang, she answered it, and began a rather loud conversation. She was asked to step out of the room until she finished the conversation. When she is called to provide assistance to the student, she often argues and yells at him. At times, she attempts to tell other students what to do, and the information she provides is often incorrect. As the teacher, how would you handle this situation?
2. You are a teacher in an 6th grade Intensive Reading Plus class (comprised of the lowest 6th grade readers in the school). One student is a twin. His brother is in the Gifted program; your student was identified with Other Health Impairment. He has extensive Cerebral Palsy and is constrained to a motorized wheelchair. His exceptionality also significantly impacts his speech and the use of his hands. A one-on-one para has been assigned to work with him in all classes throughout the school day. She has been with him since 2nd or 3rd grade. The student is seen by many students in the class as the "class pet." He sees their attention as friendship and prefers to interact with them rather than doing his classwork. The teacher has noticed that when it is time for the students to do written classwork, this student looks around the room in an attempt to engage other students, indicating to the para that she is to do the work for him. When the teacher has intervened, she indicated to the student that the para has already graduated from school and no longer needs to complete classwork. Instead, the student should determine what he wants to be written and tell the para so she can be his scribe. The student did not like the teacher's feedback and told his parents the teacher was not supporting him. As the teacher, how would you handle this situation?
You must respond to two classmates post
Part 3:Module 6: Assignment 1 - Video Response and Reflection
As indicated on the course syllabus and the modules, at various times you will be asked to view videos and reflect on their content. You will then be asked to write your thoughts and feelings and submit them for instructor feedback. Here in Module 6, view Conflict in the Workplace that is found in presentation Group Problem Solving. To access the video, please go back to the PowerPoint presentation and view the video there; it can be found on slide #49.
Instructions:
As you watch the video on causes of conflict in the workplace, you will see that they also apply to schools and may often impact individuals acting in collaborative consultation roles
As you see each of the possible causes, generate school-based examples that you have experienced, heard, or can imagine
Jot down your thoughts on this
Play the video twice since it moves rather quickly
Then write a minimum of 4 to 5 paragraphs with your thoughts from the video and submit it.
Submission Instructions:
Your response should be edited for minor grammatical and spelling errors and adhere to the general writing style and formatting guidelines of the APA Manual (6th ed.).
