(Case study essay - Ethics) Disability or Trait? For years, left-handed children faced profound disadvantages in their social and educational development. Educators considered left-handed students “defective” and “sinister;” desks accommodated only right-handed students, and left-handed students were expected to “fix” their defect by using their right hand to write, something they struggled mightily to master. Eventually, some progressive educators recommended providing desks that accommodated left-handed students. Students were no longer forced to use their right hand to write. As acceptance and accommodation of left-handed students increased, they faced fewer disadvantages and scored as well as their right-handed peers on standard measures of educational achievement.

Instruction
In as much depth as possible, please respond to the following prompt, which is based on Neil Levy’s essay, “Reconsidering Cochlear Implants: The Lessons of Martha’s Vineyard,” and the associated lectures: (see instructions) (a) What is the disability argument against the use of cochlear implants for deaf children, and how does the story about left-handedness provide an analogy for this argument? (b) What is Neil Levy’s response to the disability argument? In particular, what is the distinction he draws between a socially-caused disadvantage and a naturally-caused disadvantage, and how does this distinction inform his response? (c) Finally, what is the “lesson of Martha’s Vineyard” he thinks we should consider in evaluating the disability argument? Do not exceed 750 words.
