Review each of the MMWR articles on the Ten Great Achievements of Public Health in the US in the 20th Century. Choose one article that interests you the most. In your post on this discussion board, explain how epidemiology was employed to aid these achievements by discussing the following concepts introduced in the first lecture series (note that not all topics will have used each of these concepts):
Descriptive epidemiology refers to epidemiologic studies concerned with characterizing the amount and distribution of health and disease within a population. Think person, place, and time OR who, what, when, where.
Analytic Epidemiology examines causal (etiologic) hypotheses regarding the association between exposures and health conditions. Think how and why.
Core Aims of Epidemiology:
Describing the health status of populations
Explaining the etiology of disease
Predicting the occurrence of disease
Controlling the occurrence of disease
In public health practice, epidemiology:
focuses on populations;
examines distributions;
reveals determinants;
quantifies and evaluate outcomes;
controls health problems; and
prevents health problems.
