Instruction
You will outline and deliver a 6-7 minute persuasive speech. The goal of this speech is to persuade the audience to take action regarding a change in fact, value, or policy. You will use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence to organize your speech. Select a fact, value, or policy that you believe should be changed; the fact, value, or policy may exist at the university, local, state, national, or international level. In order for your argument to be effective, you must be able to:
demonstrate a reasonable need for the change
demonstrate that the potential for change exists
explain what this change would entail
link the impact of the policy change to your audience
As the speaker you must be more informed about your subject than the audience. Therefore, you must do a little bit of research into your subject before preparing your speech. All speeches should include at least three sources of information, which you will cite in a Works Cited page at the end of your speech-outline, using the MLA style.
You must also make effective use of Aristotle’s 3 appeals as part of your speech (Ethos, Logos, Pathos).
Finally, you are required to use ONE visual aid for this speech. You may use power-point or prezi, if you can work it into your video – just remember we will need to see you delivering the speech, as well. You may also use objects, photos, posters – be creative!
You may choose to talk about anything you wish for this assignment, but please be sure that the subject matter is appropriate for the specific context of a college classroom. Avoid trivial topics that you cannot relate to the audience in a reasonable way!
Assignment Requirements
This speech should be between 6-7 minutes and should be delivered using the extemporaneous method of delivery (see pages 66-68). This means you will outline and rehearse your speech prior to delivering it. Memorizing your speech or reading it from a script are not allowed.
Use the Outline Preparation Guidelines provided in chapter 11 as your model when outlining your speech (sample preparation outline appears on pp. 203-205). Please make sure outlines are detailed and that complete, grammatically correct sentences are used!
Grading
Correct outline format will be strictly graded. Speeches should include:
• Have a Title
• Have a clearly stated specific purpose (ONE SENTENCE)
• Have a clearly stated central idea (ONE SENTENCE)
• An introduction that captures the reader’s attention, relates to the audience, presents the central idea and previews the main points
• Effective use of Aristotle’s 3 appeals (Ethos, Logos, Pathos)
• Have a body that is clearly organized, employs specific examples, and flows well from one point to the next
• Have a conclusion that ties the main points together, reinforces the central idea and concludes on a note of finality
• Have a visual aid that conforms to the guidelines presented by the instructor in class
• And please remember: delivery aspects WILL BE graded!
