I want you to write two reflections paper a minimum of 500 words 12-point font the first reflection is answering those two questions 1.) Why did the Mu‘tazilites insist that Qur’anic references to God’s features (hands, face, etc) should be taken metaphorically rather than literally? What did they fear might happen if Muslims continued to anthropomorphize God in this manner? (See Denny 173) 2.) Consider the issue of free will and predestination in Islam (see Denny, Chap. 8 p. 169, pp. 175). Which side’s arguments make more sense to you? Do you think we are essentially free in our actions, or are our destinies already pre-determined?

The second reflection is answering those two questions 1.) Discuss Sufi interpretations of the Qur’an and describe the terms zahir and batin (p. 213). Some Sufis argue that the Qur’an has seven levels of meaning, each one more subtle and symbolic. What might be the benefit of interpreting scripture symbolically as opposed to purely literally? 2.) Describe the life of al-Ghazali and the events leading up to his spiritual/physical crisis. What prompted this crisis and how did it ultimately resolve? In what way was the crisis a turning point for him? Can you relate an experience or turning point from your own life that is similar? (in other words, can you in any way relate to what al-Ghazali may have been feeling during his crisis?)
