Part 1
Read the article "Recognizing and Managing Emotions" (Links to an external site.). As you know, you can change how you feel. The key is to be aware of your emotional response and understand what might be behind it. That way, you can apply some reason to the situation.
Think about this situation:
You have been the sales manager for over a year. Your sales reports show an increase in sales and you seem to know how to motivate your reps pretty well. But a few of the reps repeatedly complain about your management style. You tend to get very involved with their techniques, call them out when you think they are making a mistake, and don’t take criticism very well. One of the top producing reps has more complaints than the others, and he is threatening to quit.
Answer these questions about possible courses of action:
How do I feel about this situation?
What do I think I should do about it?
What effect would that have for me and for other people?
Does this action fit with my values?
If not, what else could I do that might fit better?
Is there anyone else that I could ask about this who might help me?
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXPart 2
Reflect on the readings and discussions for Competency 4. Then write a paper that addresses the following:
Write a self-development plan that focuses upon how you will develop increased levels of emotional intelligence in yourself. The plan should identify both self-awareness and situational awareness. Identify tools that you will use to analyze yourself, steps you will take based on those analyses, and expected outcomes from the development process.
Write an ethical analysis of yourself. Identify you present ethical condition and standards you consider as you evaluate yourself. Include a plan for how you will either keep yourself sensitized to ethical issues and situations, or how you will develop an increased sense of ethics as you lead.
