Part three: Module 1: Discussion 1 -- Assistive Technology and How it Supports Universal Design for Learning with the ASD Learner
Chapters 11 (Boutout) and the UDL Powerpoint of provides on overview of assistive technology and the history and legal basis of its implementation in schools and the role of the learner. Additionally, these chapters focus on the three principles of Universal Design for Learning and how AT supports this way of thinking of teaching and learning, therefore providing all students equal opportunity to learn. The following discussion questions are designed to help you more closely examine the ASD learner and how AT is used to ensure their access to learning is flexible and enhanced with methods to better meet the needs of every student.
Instructions:
Provide a written response to each of the discussion questions below:
1. Using powerpoints and Chapter 11 of Boutot to discuss the benefits and purpose of assistive technology and how it can impact classroom interaction and achievement. Consider the push back that special education students and teachers might receive from general education teachers. Explain what that might look like and why this might occur. What is the appropriate response to this as the ESE teacher?
2. Read the article from CAST and relate how UDL significantly impacts the ASD learner overall. Compare this to traditional teaching methods. How can we as educators better meet the needs of all students, especially those with ASD by implementing UDL. Focus your answer on the ASD learner both in the self-contained and inclusive settings.
