1-What is your understanding of what the author's intentions are in this book.
2-Additionally, please answer the following question: "The author traces some of the specific ways that her life has been shaped by racism. Consider your own socialization. In what specific ways has your life been shaped by racism? (If you are white, try to answer this question without mentioning people of color)."
3-What are your personal reflections from this statement? "The primary goal for white people working to understand racism is not to learn how racism impacts people of color. The primary goal is to recognize how the system of racism shapes our lives, how we uphold that system, and how we might interrupt it." -DiAngelo
4-How does/has the system fo racism impacted our lives, how do we uphold that system and/or how might we interrupt it?
START HERE-Reflection-1 -
I think the author's intention with writing this book was to educate others on the term “white fragility,” which is used to describe how simple it can be to upset white people with the topic of race. When faced with the racial discussion it can be common for white people to become defensive. Oftentimes that defensiveness roots from guilt, anger, or as a way to deflect from the unwanted conversation. DiAngelo discusses how white fragility can be a part of the problem because it sways away from properly educating yourself. It can cause those to refuse viewing others perspective which makes for ignorance and zero change. It is stressed just how important it is to learn about all perspectives as well as accept all that comes with that. As a racially mixed woman I have had trouble in the past with fitting in. I have always been too white to fit in with my Guamanian and Mexican side but too mixed to fit in with the white side. I have not had to face harsh racism head on. Rather I was faced more with the confusion of where I do belong. I think that the media spreads racial jokes and stereotypes everyday that only add to the problem. It can make people feel as though you have to choose a side. On my mixed side I am too white washed, but on my white side there are some differing perspectives on race. Although I do benefit from white privilege everyday, I feel that I do not give my identity justice. I always ponder why I feel as though I need to try to belong where I should or why I feel like I have to choose between the two sides. DiAngelo is speaking to white people when she shares this quote about the primary goal. Racism is everywhere whether that involves facing it, dishing it, or simply ignoring it and I believe that the author is trying to encourage white people to understand that racism is so much deeper than just something little that people have to deal with. There is an entire history and system based off of racism. I think it pushes white people to understand that although they may deal with problems in their life, it still is never because of the color of their skin. It is important to learn how you may add to the problem and how you may change that. She encourages those to try to educate themselves on another perspective besides their own. There are still countless stories where POC are treated as less than others and are affected greatly because of that. Incarceration rates as well as housing, income, and opportunities are just some things people deal with simply because of the color of their skin. Something they can NOT choose. This broken system is still reality and it is important to learn and accept that everyone has their own perspective. Throwing away those stereotypes and unity can make all the difference because racism is a part of everyone’s lives.
SECOND REFLECTION START HERE-My understanding of this book is that it's a book where it tries to give a clear understanding of how white fragility works. The author of this book is a white woman who tried to give the perspective of a white that has been misunderstood weaving colored people. The book is a phenomenon by which white people become angry when it comes to comforting the idea that they are complicit in system racism. I feel that this book is written for white people who consider themselves to be liberal or progressive on racial matters. The author writes this book as a white woman where she states that whites can not emotionally withstand amounts of racial stress or into a defensive posture when they are forced to discuss racism. Being a Latina with not much experience with English sometimes speaking broken English it gives many people a reason to talk about or judge me. I was born and grew in Mexico with three of my siblings and my parents, I never thought that one day I was going to speak another language that its not Spanish but also that learning another language and not knowing how to say some words or sometimes speak it broken would make me feel less than other people who would have a perfect assent. I started middle school here in the United States. I did not know any English or someone that could help me, thankfully there was an ELD class that it was an English class for all the students that were learning English and on that class, I meet people that didn't know English and we become friends, but when other students that knew English or were born here in the united states noticed that I did not English they started making me feel less or like as if I was different from them. They would say words to me like “paisita” or "the immigrant girl" which is A meaning a person of your Latin race, but they didn’t say that in a good way they would do it make me feel less because I didn’t know English. I would be by myself but students were always talking behind me, they would point at me and sometimes they would embarrass me in class with comments .not knowing how to speak English was something to make fun of me from other people and for me, it was an experience where I was been attacked by racism people. My reflection from this statement is that this reading is trying to clarify how racism impacts all people’s lives in many ways. Sometimes the people that are the racist ones don't see the harm they are doing to others in many ways. Racism impacted our lives by causing people to do bad things sometimes against themselves or to take an attack with violence. Something that we should all do is accept each other no matter what color skin, language, or country we come from because we all live in one word that has to be shared with all of us. This country is not only from several groups of people; this country belongs to everyone.
