Part 1: Module 3: Discussion 1 -- Using Visual Support to Promote Positive Behavior and Enhancing Communication with Assistive Technology Use Chapter 13 of the Ganz text to review an overview of assistive technology and the role it plays in both enhancing communication and in the creation of visual supports that support positive behavior. Additionally, these chapters focus on the specific problems with communication faced by students with disabilities as well as the importance of communication for those who cannot speak. Technology plays a vital role in supporting positive behavior and reducing the number of classroom disruption often exhibited by students with ASD. Some of these supports include visual supports, picture schedules, video modeling and social stories. The following discussion questions are designed to help you more closely examine the ASD learner and how AT is used to support positive behavior and support active communication at home, at school, and in the community. Instructions: Provide a written response to each of the discussion questions below: 1. Why is the role of assistive technology to support positive behavior so prevalent when working with students in the ASD community? Provide examples of how picture schedules, video modeling, and social stories can be used and when it would be appropriate to use each. 2. Discuss how creating each of these visual supports positively impacts student behavior and daily living. Your response to each question must be a minimum of 1-2 paragraphs and clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors. Additionally, state in a few sentences how the use of this specific technology would impact the academic achievement and social emotional interaction of both the student using it as well as the other students and staff the student encounters throughout the day. Submission Instructions:Your reflections/reactions to the videos assigned should be edited for minor grammatical errors and adhere to the general writing style and formatting guidelines of the APA Manual (6th ed.). Part 3: Module 3: Assignment 1 -- Autism Speaks Scavenger Hunt Autism Speaks lists their mission as: “Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.” As a prospective special education teacher and professional, who will be working with individuals with autism, it behooves you to become familiar with this organization and the wealth of information and resources that it makes available to all. They are the largest advocacy organization dealing specifically with autism in the US. This organizations sponsors autism research and conducts outreach activities to spread ASD awareness on the lifelong educational, medical, and daily living skills needs of the individual and the family. Scavenger Hunt: Autism Speaks Scavenger Hunt 1. What is the purpose of the communication roadmap? 2. List and explain the four purposes for using AT devices. 3. Using the transition tool kit explain how AT can assist in the transition process. 4. Three take-aways from the article, “Will communication device hamper real speech in child with autism?” 5. Five take aways from the article, “Know Your Rights to Access Assistive Technology” and how this affects you as an educator. 6. In Autism Facts and Figures list 5 things you did not know or were surprised to learn. 7. What did you find in the resource guide that might help you in this course.
